How Sleep Cycles Work

Sleep moves repeatedly through non-REM and REM stages. The sequence changes across the night: deep sleep is more prominent earlier, while REM periods tend to become longer later. A repeating sequence does not mean every cycle takes exactly the same number of minutes.

Use it in context

Two ways to apply the plan

Stages are not clock slots

Non-REM sleep includes lighter sleep and deep sleep. REM sleep is another part of the repeating pattern. Brief awakenings can occur between or within these periods. A bedtime calculator knows only the schedule you enter; it cannot identify which stage you are in.

Plan opportunity, not stage boundaries

Allow enough time for sleep before choosing reference blocks. Five blocks describe a duration assumption, not five observed transitions. If a longer sleep opportunity fits your needs, do not shorten it to obtain a round cycle count.

Build tonight’s timeline

Sleep cycles vary from person to person and across the night. We use 90 minutes as a planning reference, not a measurement of your actual sleep stages.

Important limitations

Results are planning estimates based on your times and adjustable settings. They do not detect sleep stages and are not medical advice. Do not reduce your sleep opportunity just to match a cycle count. Seek professional care for persistent sleepiness or sleep-health concerns.

Questions

What to know before using the result

How can I apply this to tonight?

Allow enough time for sleep before choosing reference blocks. Five blocks describe a duration assumption, not five observed transitions. If a longer sleep opportunity fits your needs, do not shorten it to obtain a round cycle count.

Does the calculator measure my sleep stages?

No. It uses your clock times and adjustable assumptions to plan sleep opportunity. It does not observe sleep or diagnose a condition.

What if the plan leaves too little sleep?

Review a longer sleep opportunity and the commitments around it. Do not shorten sleep just to match a reference block. Seek individual advice for persistent sleepiness or sleep concerns.
