6 Sleep Cycles: Timing and Duration

6 sleep cycles × 90-minute planning reference ≈ 9h planned sleep. Actual human sleep cycles vary. Settling and wind-down are additional time, not part of that duration. These reference blocks do not measure your actual sleep stages or predict an ideal alarm boundary.

Build tonight’s timeline

Sleep cycles vary from person to person and across the night. We use 90 minutes as a planning reference, not a measurement of your actual sleep stages.

  2. Get into bed
  3. Aim to be asleep
  4. Wake-up goal

Methodology

How to interpret this plan

How BedtimePilot calculates your plan

How we calculate

Six blocks give nine hours at the default reference. An earlier wind-down may be needed to preserve a fixed morning. More time allocated does not prove you slept for all nine hours.

Important limitations

Results are planning estimates based on your times and adjustable settings. They do not detect sleep stages and are not medical advice. Do not reduce your sleep opportunity just to match a cycle count. Seek professional care for persistent sleepiness or sleep-health concerns.

Two ways to apply the plan

Bedtime examples

For a 7:00 AM wake-up goal, start winding down at 9:05 PM, get into bed at 9:50 PM, and target sleep at 10:00 PM. For a 8:00 AM wake-up goal, start winding down at 10:05 PM, get into bed at 10:50 PM, and target sleep at 11:00 PM. Evening times before midnight are on the previous day. These examples allow 10 minutes to settle and 45 minutes to wind down.

Wake-up examples

Getting into bed at 10:00 PM, with 10 minutes to settle, gives a 10:10 PM sleep target and a 7:10 AM wake-up time the next morning. Getting into bed at 11:00 PM, with 10 minutes to settle, gives a 11:10 PM sleep target and a 8:10 AM wake-up time the next morning. These are planning estimates, not predictions of sleep stages or guaranteed alertness.

Questions

What to know before using the result

Does this measure my sleep?

No. There are no sleep-stage measurements in this calculator.

Can I adjust the plan?

Yes. Set the fixed wake-up goal first, then review the planning duration and buffers.

Where can I read the evidence?

The source links below explain sleep stages and adult duration guidance. They do not prescribe an exact alarm minute.
