How to Plan Bedtime Around Wake Time

Start with tomorrow's fixed wake-up goal. Subtract the planned sleep duration, then subtract time to settle, then subtract wind-down. The result is four separate checkpoints: wind down, get into bed, target sleep, and wake up.

Use it in context

Two ways to apply the plan

Work backward from the morning

Choose a duration that allows enough sleep rather than starting with a preferred late bedtime. Settling time is not sleep, and wind-down is not settling time. Keeping these separate prevents an evening routine from consuming the sleep opportunity unnoticed.

A 7 AM worked example

With 7 hours 30 minutes planned sleep, 15 minutes to settle and 45 minutes to wind down, the checkpoints are 10:30 PM, 11:15 PM, 11:30 PM and 7 AM. The evening times are the previous day. Changing the buffers moves evening checkpoints while keeping the morning fixed.

Build tonight’s timeline

Sleep cycles vary from person to person and across the night. We use 90 minutes as a planning reference, not a measurement of your actual sleep stages.

Your selected plan · 5 cycles
  1. Wind down
  2. Get into bed
  3. Aim to be asleep
  4. Wake-up goal

How BedtimePilot calculates your plan

How we calculate

Choose a duration that allows enough sleep rather than starting with a preferred late bedtime. Settling time is not sleep, and wind-down is not settling time. Keeping these separate prevents an evening routine from consuming the sleep opportunity unnoticed.

Important limitations

Results are planning estimates based on your times and adjustable settings. They do not detect sleep stages and are not medical advice. Do not reduce your sleep opportunity just to match a cycle count. Seek professional care for persistent sleepiness or sleep-health concerns.

Questions

What to know before using the result

How can I apply this to tonight?

With 7 hours 30 minutes planned sleep, 15 minutes to settle and 45 minutes to wind down, the checkpoints are 10:30 PM, 11:15 PM, 11:30 PM and 7 AM. The evening times are the previous day. Changing the buffers moves evening checkpoints while keeping the morning fixed.

Does the calculator measure my sleep stages?

No. It uses your clock times and adjustable assumptions to plan sleep opportunity. It does not observe sleep or diagnose a condition.

What if the plan leaves too little sleep?

Review a longer sleep opportunity and the commitments around it. Do not shorten sleep just to match a reference block. Seek individual advice for persistent sleepiness or sleep concerns.
