How Much Sleep Do Adults Need?

The AASM and Sleep Research Society consensus recommends that adults sleep seven or more hours per night regularly. This is a general recommendation, not a personal prescription or proof that seven hours meets everyone's needs. Planned time and actual sleep are different.

Use it in context

Two ways to apply the plan

Do not turn a threshold into a ceiling

Some adults need more than seven hours. Time spent awake in bed reduces actual sleep within a scheduled window. A six-hour result from four reference blocks remains a short opportunity; a round number of blocks does not override duration guidance.

Preserve an eight-hour opportunity

For an 8-hour sleep opportunity ending at 7 AM, target sleep at 11 PM. With 10 minutes to settle, get into bed at 10:50 PM. Use the duration calculator to preserve eight hours rather than rounding down to five 90-minute blocks.

Build tonight’s timeline

Sleep cycles vary from person to person and across the night. We use 90 minutes as a planning reference, not a measurement of your actual sleep stages.

  2. Get into bed
  3. Aim to be asleep

How BedtimePilot calculates your plan

How we calculate

Some adults need more than seven hours. Time spent awake in bed reduces actual sleep within a scheduled window. A six-hour result from four reference blocks remains a short opportunity; a round number of blocks does not override duration guidance.

Important limitations

Results are planning estimates based on your times and adjustable settings. They do not detect sleep stages and are not medical advice. Do not reduce your sleep opportunity just to match a cycle count. Seek professional care for persistent sleepiness or sleep-health concerns.

Questions

What to know before using the result

How can I apply this to tonight?

For an 8-hour sleep opportunity ending at 7 AM, target sleep at 11 PM. With 10 minutes to settle, get into bed at 10:50 PM. Use the duration calculator to preserve eight hours rather than rounding down to five 90-minute blocks.

Does the calculator measure my sleep stages?

No. It uses your clock times and adjustable assumptions to plan sleep opportunity. It does not observe sleep or diagnose a condition.

What if the plan leaves too little sleep?

Review a longer sleep opportunity and the commitments around it. Do not shorten sleep just to match a reference block. Seek individual advice for persistent sleepiness or sleep concerns.
